October's full moon on Oct. 17 — also known as the Hunter's Moon — was not only a stunning supermoon, it was the brightest one of 2024. This particular supermoon was extra special since its orbit was closest to Earth, which made it appear brighter than any other supermoons this year, per Space.com.

Along the lunar orbital path, the point of closest proximity is known as perigee, which is when the moon is, on average, 226,000 miles (363,300 kilometers) from Earth. When a full moon phase coincides with perigee, a supermoon event occurs.

The Hunter's Moon is the full moon following the Harvest Moon. It rises around the same time for several nights, providing early light for fall harvests and hunting activities. The Farmer's Almanac explains that the term "Hunter's Moon" refers to the period after leaves have fallen, making prey easier to spot for hunters with the added moonlight.
