Rwanda’s health minister says authorities are tracing every potential contact of the index case in the country’s outbreak of Marburg virus disease to reduce the risk of wider spread

A deadly, Ebola-like virus called Marburg is currently causing an outbreak in Rwanda. The country declared an outbreak of Marburg virus disease on Sept. 27 and has reported 58 confirmed cases and 13 deaths as of Oct. 8. Many of those who have been infected are health-care workers.

Amid an outbreak of Marburg virus in Rwanda, travelers coming into the United States who have been in Rwanda in the previous 21 days will be screened starting next week, the US Department of Health and Human Services announced Monday.

The East African country continues to investigate the source of the outbreak, first traced among patients in health facilities.

U.S. health officials announced Monday that all passengers flying from Rwanda to the United States will soon be screened for the Ebola-like Marburg virus.

Marburg virus is named after the town in Germany where it first emerged. In 1967, there were simultaneous outbreaks at laboratories in Marburg and Belgrade in Serbia (then part of Yugoslavia). The outbreak was caused by African green monkeys imported from Uganda for use in experiments. Seven people died.

Rwanda declared the outbreak on Sept. 27 and has so far reported that 13 people have died. Rwanda received 700 doses of a vaccine under trial from the U.S.

Jean Kaseya, head of the African health body, said Rwanda shouldn't be punished for being transparent about the outbreak.View on euronews

Rwanda's efforts to curb the spread of the deadly Marburg disease has yielded fruits as health officials in the country and the Africa Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have reported that the outbreak has been contained.
