Walgreens, one of the country’s largest pharmacy chains, is closing 1,200 stores across the U.S. The shutdowns, announced yesterday in an earnings report, will take place over the next three years with 500 taking place in fiscal 2025. Locations that will be closed have not been announced but all of the locations were deemed “unprofitable.”

The Walgreens on South Layton Boulevard and National Avenue abruptly closed its doors as the retail and pharmacy giant prepares to shutter more stores.

A staple pharmacy on the Upper East Side has already posted a sign that it will close in a few weeks. Residents say The Duane Reade, owned by Walgreens, competes with other retail pharmacies and shoplifters.
